A record fifty-nine members of the class of 1974 celebrated their fiftieth reunion and enjoyed a full weekend of events, including a special cocktail party and dinner hosted by Headmaster Byron Hulsey ’86. The class also set a reunion fundraising record, raising $2,034,000 — the largest fiftieth reunion gift in Woodberry history. The class dedicated its gift to the memory of their fifteen deceased classmates. In addition, the class of 1974 fiftieth reunion committee chose to help fund the Harry W. “Red” and Cathy Caughron Scholarship Fund as the main way of honoring their milestone.
“The faculty and staff make Woodberry such a special place,” said Dean Norman ’74. “I can think of no better way to honor our class legacy than by giving to the Caughron Fund.”
The gift is especially meaningful because Red and Cathy’s daughter, Deb Caughron, is a member of the class and served on the reunion committee. Red and Cathy spent thirty-one years at Woodberry where, in addition to their work with students, they founded and directed the beloved Woodberry Forest Sports Camp. Their transformative impact on the boys under their mentorship and care remains present today.
Another highlight was Frank Daniels ‘74 establishing the Steve ‘74 and Tanita Stancill Woodberry Summer Abroad Programs Student Aid Fund in honor of his close friend and classmate. The Stancills created and led the Woodberry in Scotland program for more than twenty years, and Frank Daniels’s generosity will help current Woodberry boys enjoy a life-changing summer abroad experience.
JC Cohen ’74 summed it up well: “Woodberry continues to this day to be a constant force in my life. Our class is special and, over the years, we have helped each other through the good and the challenging times in life. Now we can give back to the place that shaped us.”
