Tuition Assistance Fund Honors Class of 2024

On a warm and clear Amici Night, Eli ’94 and Julia Green announced that this year’s Sixth Form Parents’ and Grandparents’ Gift of $500,000 would be used to create the Class of 2024 Scholarship Fund. Eli and Julia, parents of William Green ’24, served as cochairs of the Sixth-Form Parents’ and Grandparents’ Gift Committee.

“It’s a pleasure for Julia and me to speak briefly here tonight on behalf of the parents and the grandparents and the boys of the class of 2024,” said Eli. “It’s an honor to be able to present the class of 2024 endowment for tuition assistance. I want to thank all the parents, grandparents, and significant others who contributed to this gift and most importantly, the boys out there. You are the reason why this gift was created.”

The fund to support tuition assistance was supported by 100 percent of the class’s parents.“

It’s very important for me to briefly touch on and recognize the incredible culture of giving at Woodberry,” said Eli. “None of us would be here today without the generosity of those who came before us.”

Over the past twenty years, parents and grandparents of graduating sixth formers have contributed more than $12 million to support Woodberry. In previous years, their philanthropy and shared generosity has helped to fund projects including the development of the Rapidan Recreational Area, the renovation of the Fir Tree patio, and the naming of the revitalized commons room in Hanes Hall.

Tuition assistance, the focus of the class of 2024 gift, has been a priority at Woodberry for nearly a century. The first tuition assistance program grew out of the turmoil caused by the Great Depression. J. Carter Walker, the school’s first headmaster, did everything in his power to ensure boys would not be forced to leave the school because of economic circumstances. More recently, a centerpiece of the Campaign for the Boys was to raise money to endow a larger percentage of the annual tuition assistance budget.

“To all of the boys in the class of 2024, as you consider how you can give back to Woodberry in the future, please know that this endowment is a living and breathing thing that you will always be able to support,” said Eli. “It’s there for the boys who come after you, so please consider supporting it.”
